PRESS RELEASE: Judges sit in 'Judgment' at the Willows Theatre 
What is the responsibility of individuals caught in a seemingly irresistible wave of evildoing?  In light of recent events in Rwanda, Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Sudan, Congo, and East Timor, this question is, unfortunately, more relevant than ever.  The Willows Theatre, one of the Bay Area’s most celebrated professional theaters, explores this issue with a new stage adaptation of the 1961 award-winning film Judgment at Nuremberg by Abby Mann. ...   <more>

The Nuremberg War Crimes Trial
From November 20, 1945, until October 1, 1946, an International Military Tribunal convened in the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg with the goal of trying high Nazi officials for actions committed during World War II that contravened the accepted laws of war. Among the practices condemned were plotting and waging aggressive war, using slave labor, looting occupied countries, and abusing and murdering civilians (especially Jews) and prisoners of war. The Big Three powers (the United States, USSR, and Great Britain) had met at conferences in Moscow, Teheran, Yalta and Potsdam and agreed to try and to punish those responsible.

Judgment at Nuremberg author's introduction
On March 26, 2001, I stood backstage at the Longacre Theatre. It was the opening night of Judgment at Nuremberg on Broadway. I knew the theater well. As a student at NYU, I used to sneak into the second acts at theatres including the Longacre because I didn't have enough money to pay for tickets --  and a good many times I would be humbled by ushers asking me to leave..

About the Author - Abby Mann
 
Abby Mann’s television and film writing career has spanned four decades and earned him widespread critical acclaim and numerous prestigious industry awards in the United States and abroad. He has received an Academy Award and New York Film Critics Award for his screenplay for Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), and Emmys for The Marcus-Nelson Murders (1973, the pilot for the TV series Kojak), Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story (1989), and Indictment: The McMartin Case (1995).
