Press Room:
Sister Amnesia's Country Western
Nunsense Jamboree

It’s a down-home good
time at
Sister Mary Amnesia’s Country Western Nunsense Jamboree
'Nunsense' fun continues at the Willows Cabaret in Martinez

Concord, CA. July 17,
2007 – Over 7,000
happy theatre-goers laughed and cheered at Nunsense – the
inaugural production at the Willows Cabaret at the Campbell Theater in
Martinez –
as Sister Mary Amnesia (who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her
head) suddenly remembered that she was really Sister Mary Paul – the
country-western singing nun sensation who had mysteriously disappeared
shortly before receiving the news that she had won the Publishers Clearing
House Sweepstakes. Now the exuberant (and suddenly cash rich) Little
Sisters of Hoboken are sending their lucky sister on the road to promote her
new country-western album – “I Could’ve Gone to Nashville” –
in Sister Mary Amnesia’s Country Western Jamboree, the next
installment of the Nunsense series of musicals, which will run from
August 17, 2007, through September 16, 2007, at the Campbell Theatre in
Martinez. Previews will begin August 15, 2007. Author/Composer Dan
Goggin directs, with musical staging by Teri Gibson and musical
direction by Kim Vetterli.
Joining Sister Amnesia on the tour are street-wise, Brooklyn-born Sister
Robert Anne (who is something of a Broadway belter herself) and novice
Sister Mary Leo, who it turns out is a lasso-twirling whiz as well as an
accomplished ballerina.
Sister Mary
Wilhem (the convent nurse), and Father Virgil Manly Trott (Sister Leo’s
real-life brother) also join the tour to keep the sisters out of trouble.
Nunsense Jamboree is filled with the corny one-liners and
infectious comic tunes which have made the Nunsense series a favorite
of audiences worldwide. Playgoers participate in a rousing "Country Auction"
and join with the cast as they sing,
"We know that somewhere up in heaven you're
a saint, Patsy Cline!" Will Sister Amnesia leave the convent
for the Grand Ole Opry? You'll have to wait till the finale,
"Do Unto
Others" to get the answer.
Playwright Goggin terms the
show "Nunsense meets Hee-Haw.”
Nunsense Jamboree
received its world premiere at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in suburban
Minneapolis on December 1, 1995, and received its West Coast premiere at the
Willows Theatre in 1996, where it played for an extended run. The show has
been performed throughout the world, and was made into a television special
starring Vicki Lawrence.
“The Nunsense
Jamboree is a collection of goofy stories, tunefully accessible
songs and acres of gags. These singing nuns (and a priest) triumph yet
again! The only goal is to amuse and they clearly do! It’s tasty fun with
a twang!” said critic Mike Steele of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
